BMW 225xe Models
There are two main BMW 225xe models available on the market – BMW 225xe Active Tourer Plug-in and BMW 225xe iPerformance. Both models use a Type 2 plug and support a maximum charging power of 3.7 kW. The difference lies in the battery capacity.
| Model | Plug Type | Max. Power | Battery Capacity |
| BMW 225xe Active Tourer (2016-2018) | Type 2 | 3.7 kW | 6.1 kWh |
| BMW 225xe Active Tourer (2018-2021) | Type 2 | 3.7 kW | 7.7 kWh |
| BMW 225xe iPerformance (2015-2022) | Type 2 | 3.7 kW | 6.1 kWh |
Charging Capabilities and Time
The BMW 225xe can be charged using charging stations of different power outputs. It’s important to note that a higher-powered charging device won’t charge the car faster than its specifications allow, but it won’t cause any harm either.
The available options are:
- – 3.7 kW (1 phase, 16A) – ~2 hours for a full charge
- – 7.4 kW (1 phase, 32A) – no acceleration compared to 3.7 kW
- – 11 kW (3 phase, 16A) – compatible but won’t charge faster
- – 22 kW (3 phase, 32A) – no advantage for BMW 225xe
Types of Charging Stations
You have a choice between a charging device with a fixed cable (convenient for quick connection) or with a standard socket (more flexible solution, suitable for several different vehicles).
Electrical Panel Connection Considerations
The choice of suitable charger also depends on your electrical panel. Single-phase panels typically support up to 4 kW, while three-phase panels can handle up to 22 kW. If you have a three-phase panel, it’s a good idea to opt for an 11 kW charging station, which will serve you well if you switch to a fully electric model in the future.
Mobile Charger for BMW 225xe
With a mobile charger, you can charge your BMW 225xe from a regular home outlet (220V). This charging is usually slower – 2.3 kW or 3.7 kW, and care must be taken with the total load on the electrical installation to avoid overheating or damage.
Charging Cable for BMW 225xe
The BMW 225xe uses a Type 2 (Mennekes) connector. You can use either a single-phase or three-phase cable – the heavier one won’t cause damage but won’t speed up charging.
